It seems like you can’t travel far in Round Rock these days without encountering some kind of road improvement project. Considering how quickly the city has grown over the past two decades, it’s no surprise that the city needed some major upgrades. Here is the low down on the most recent projects and how they will impact Round Rock.
RM 620
Most recently 620 has been widened to include additional lanes and access to the toll way between SH 45 and IH 35. The new lanes will help with traffic congestion on 620 in the morning and afternoons. The next additions will be a bridge to carry traffic over the Union Pacific Railroad tracks and Chisholm Trail road.
University Boulevard
This busy road by the outlet mall in Round Rock will also be widened starting early 2016 to include 6 lanes.
Mays Street
Construction will begin this year on Mays Street in downtown Round Rock to improve traffic and access to businesses. This is another much needed improvement for Round Rock, especially with the addition of new bars and restaurants. The downtown area construction will include widening of the 4 lane street to include an additional center turn lane and other aesthetic enhancements.
IH-35
Plans have been set in motion for reversals of the entrance and exit ramps on IH- 35 in order to reduce traffic and offer better access to business along the corridor. Additionally, an auxiliary lane will be added between FM 3406 and U.S. 79.
The City of Round Rock is also working to improve the walk-ability of the city by expanding the city’s sidewalk system. The proposed locations for the sidewalk improvements include South Mays, Somerset, Greenlawn, and Joe DiMaggio/ U.S. 79.
In total, the City of Round Rock maintains over 1,150 miles of road, which are constantly being evaluated for improvements. While the construction may seem to be a short term inconvenience, upon completion they will make the city a better place to live and drive in.
