Initially dubbed ‘Masontown’ and settled by formerly enslaved people following the announcement of the Emancipation Proclamation, the newly established community, now part of the Central East core of neighborhoods along the north bank of the colorado river was later renamed for the civil rights activist, Cesar Chavez.
